Although there are a number of family based preference categories, most of
them have a long waiting list of applicants waiting for their number to come
up. In some cases, such as petitions filed for siblings [between
brothers/sisters], the waiting period is over ten years! The only
immediate category is for spouses of US citizens. We can usually process
a visa application in that category in about 6 to 8 weeks, but it can take long
if there is a seasonal glut of applications.
The waiting period for unmarried sons and daughters of US citizens is currently
close to two years. All other categories are in excess of four
years. If you are not an immediate famlily memeber of a U.S. citizen or
Legal Permanent Resident [Green Card Resident], you probably dont have a chance
on the family based system.
